It is a representative of Yanagawa's waterfront scenery that evokes the atmosphere of the castle town period. Namikura is a nationally registered tangible cultural property built in the Taisho era (1912-1926) as a malt cellar for the Tsuru Miso Brewery, which was founded in 1871. It is also designated as a national cultural asset "Suikyo Yanagawa," a scenic landscape that became a source of art for Kitahara Hakushu, a national poet from Yanagawa. Hakushu wrote a tanka poem about the sight of the red brick walls of Namikura glistening in the western sun on the surface of the ditch where Taiwanese cypress flowers bloom. The view can also be enjoyed from a river boat.
