Iwasaki Shrine was designated as a village shrine in 1872 (Meiji 5) due to the separation of Shinto and Buddhism. On the first Sunday of September, a sumo tournament called "Ishinage Sumo" is held at the shrine. It is said that this event started when young people in the village gathered near the Mizumabashi Bridge to wrestle each other as a universal prayer to ward off an epidemic that was spreading in the late Edo period (1603-1868). There are individual and team competitions by elementary school students, and "baby ring-entering," in which wishes for healthy upbringing are expressed.
