Nakama City
Nakama Karato Water Gate
In Genna 7, under the order of Nagamasa Kuroda, the first lord of the Fukuoka domain, excavation of the "Horikawa" canal began for the purpose of flood control, water transportation, and irrigation. It was a major construction project, running from Nakama City to Mizumaki Town, passing through Orio, Yahatanishi-ku, to Dokai Bay. However, two years later, the work was halted due to the death of Nagamasa Nagamasa, and construction was not resumed until 130 years later. In the 12th year of the Horeki era, during the reign of Tsugitaka, the 6th lord of the domain, the Horikawa River was finally fully opened to traffic with the completion of "Karato," a water intake from the Ongagawa River. Karato" means "sluice gate" in Japanese, and the sluice gate is a unique structure in which the amount of water flow is controlled by the number of long, thin boards placed in the sluice gate's groove, and is designated as a cultural asset by the prefecture.
