Dazaifu City
Dazaifu Government Office Ruins (Tofuro Ruins)
The Dazaifu Government Office was the central facility of Dazaifu, the government office that controlled Kyushu from the late 7th century through the Nara and Heian periods, and served as the geographical window to the Asian continent and as the front line of Japanese diplomacy and defense.
Although the buildings of the Dazaifu Government Office have been lost, the foundation stones of the buildings from that period can still be seen on the vast site, providing a glimpse of the prosperity that existed in those days.
The area around the Dazaifu Government Office is now maintained as a historical site park and is crowded with families and tourists.
